To be a Writer – Issa Dioume

Read in the bus,
Read in the waiting room of an interview for a better job,
Read while treading tar-black bent sidewalks to a less enjoyable job,
Read from a hospital bed dressed in white,
Read from your dank prison cell,
Read in the dark and in the silence when no one can know you like to read in your household,
Read, read, read to be a writer
Read so that one day, if chance smiles over you, you will explode.
Inspiration will descend, Ink will spill out of you, your mouth will move like a pantomime, unable to speak but able to write your hand will brandish a feather and you will expulse all the words that filled the spring of your mind.

To be a writer, read until you must write yourself.
